As an extension to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Thane civic commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal aims for a open defecation-free Thane by March 2017 and a solid-waste-free city by October 2018.

With Jaiswal's ambitious plan, very soon one may witness a clean and green Thane.

Jaiswal said, "Centre has given funds to build toilets across the city. Through community, public and household toilets, we aim to achieve our goal. The toilets developed on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model by Habitat for Humanity would be classy and consist of urban restrooms with separate facilities for men and women."

The modular toilets would be installed across many areas in Thane and public toilets would specifically be promoted in slum areas, where people to toilet ratio is dismal. Rajan Samuel, managing director, Habitat for Humanity said, "The community toilets will ensure cleanliness, easy accessibility and convenience to the community in the vicinity. These toilets will be a paradigm shift from the regular shauchalayas we see around us."

"The community toilets will be owned and managed by the Community Based Organization (CBO) and will operate on 'pay and use' model. In terms of the users – community members will have monthly pass while others will pay per use. The toilets will have a caretaker, who will maintain cleanliness and hygiene," added Samuel.

Along with defecation free city, the civic commissioner has plans for zero garbage too. Near about 650 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated in the city, per day. Taking a step towards solid waste management, the civic chief has proposed decentralised waste management. He has also urged people to practice the same in their homes and society.

The residents are happy about this idea and hope the facility to be completed on time rather being delayed. Earlier many projects had been put forward by the corporation and promised a rebate in property tax for maintaining greenery and implementing rain water harvesting project, but many of the housing societies who implemented it are yet waiting for the promised waiver.
