After the massive Kamala Mill fire in December, a Notice of Motion has been moved by Sheetal Mhatre, Shiv Sena corporator, seeking a fire safety audit for all schools in Mumbai. The notice also demands emegency fire-safety training programmes for school staff.

Mhatre tabled a proposal in the general body meeting of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding that fire safety audit must be carried out in all aided and unaided schools. “Fire safety measures were taken by many schools. But, the civic body needs to check whether the systems are in working condition or not, and make sure that the school’s staff are aware how to use them in case of fire,” said Mhatre.

A number of fires across the city has raised concerns over fire safety in commercial as well as residential buildings across the city. Following which, the BMC has been undertaking various measures to ensure fire-safety complaince which include designating 34 Mumbai Fire Brigade officers as Fire Compliance officers who would ensure that building meet fire safety measures.

However, the safety of  school children are dependent on the available fire-safety systems within the school premises and the staffs’ alertness to handle fire disasters.

The issue raised by Mhatre was already discussed in BMC’s Education Committee in January. The Education Department has started the work to ensure that all its 1,195 schools are fire compliant before February 15. Even in the Education Committee meeting, several corporators brought up the issue of fire safety in schools run by the corporation.

Shubhada Gudhekar, Chairperson of the Education Committee, had earlier said that the BMC is working with schools to ensure that the fire safety equipment in schools are in working condition and fire audits are conducted in schools across the city.

Mhatre’s notice will be discussed in the BMC general body meeting on February 15.
