It seems that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has started preparing heavily for the 2017 civic polls. The civic body is currently in the process of marking the boundaries of all the 227 electoral wards on google earth, as per the directions from the state election commission.

As part of the plan, enumeration blocks will also be GIS mapped and in each block, the population as per the latest 2011 census will be marked. The herculean task will be undertaken by the election department of the BMC, with the help of the civic IT department and the medical officer (health) of all the 24 administrative civic wards, following which, it will be submitted to the state election commission.

As per the 2011 census, there are a total 27,434 enumeration blocks marked across Mumbai, with a population of 1.24 crore.

Sources said after going through the block population report and checking if there has been a spurt or decrease in population, the state election commission will take a call if the number of electoral wards will have to be increased or decreased from the current 227. Civic officials, however, refused to divulge any detail on it, saying that the process has to be carried out discreetly, to avoid any kind of political interference in it.

The progress in this regard was recently discussed in a meeting called by additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas along with the election department and the assistant municipal commissioners of all the 24 administrative wards.
