Developers in the city have a reason to rejoice. Until last year, when they developed a new building, their biggest concern had been to ensure that buyers get adequate water supply. But now, with the civic body announcing an increase in the daily water supply, experts feel the housing industry will get great boost.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that the per head per day daily supply of water will be upped to 135 litres from 90 litres from October 1 this year.
President of the Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI), Paras Gundecha said that for the last few years, residents had been suffering as they were denied their rightful stock of water and that this news was a relief to them all.
“Although consumers understood the issue of water shortage, they had to complain about the shortage they faced as water is a basic necessity,” Gundecha said.
A senior civic official from the water department said the BMC had claimed to bring in at least 200 MLD of water supply to the city last year, but due to inadequate rain, the Middle Vaitarna Dam could hold less water which then got absorbed in the ground.
“The water stock was not enough for supply. This year the required quantity will be collected and the city will be supplied a good amount,” the official said, adding that the civic body was also paying attention to the water lost during distribution and is plugging leakages and replacing old and corroded pipelines.
