In an effort to address the core issue of clearing crowds from railway stations, the Indian Railways and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have agreed to work together and extend the roofs of foot-overbridges (FOBs) by at least 50 meters towards the road from the staircases leading up to the FOBs.
The objective is to ensure that sufficient roof cover is given to rail commuters who exit the the station premises using the FOBs. Sources in the railways said that they have approached the BMC to provide land so that poles can be erected and the roof can be extended.
"We want to create a pathway from the end of the staircase till the nearest road so that people can walk till the end without worrying about sun or rains," said a WR official.
This is one of the issues highlighted by the audit teams, of the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR), which inspected stations on the Mumbai suburban network. The WR is yet to officially submit the report. The BMC is likely to demolish the encroachments coming in the way of this path where the sheds will be extended.
"Yes, we are planning this, and are supporting the railways in every way possible," said Ram Dotonde, spokesperson, BMC.
There are also plans to talk to the taxi and auto rickshaw unions to ensure proper queues can be formed at the exit point of these extended pathways. This would ensure that people take the next mode of transport with ease.
The BMC and the railways will also connect the FOBs with skywalks so that additional exit points are created. The WR and CR are constructing 10 and 20 new FOBs respectively.
