It seems apathy of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put lives of citizens in danger. While the civic body claims to have shut the skywalk in Dahisar West for general public citing it unfit for use, a recent visit by DNA revealed that people were still using it.

In April 2017, the BMC had shut the Dahisar skywalk on the western side after claiming that it was not fit for use and a structural audit would be done to identify its drawbacks.

The structural audit was to be carried out considering that a portion of the skywalk had come crashing down injuring two people.

However, a recent visit by DNA revealed that the entry and exit points of the skywalk were open for public and there were children playing on the skywalk. Also, it has become a hot-spot for lovebirds. There was no hoarding or security presence at the skywalk to inform general public about it being unfit for use.

The Dahisar skywalk was constructed at cost of Rs 15 crore and was opened for public almost eight years ago. The skywalk in news back in 2012 when it started developing cracks just a year after its construction was completed.

When contacted, Sandhya Nandekar, Assistant Municipal Corporation (AMC) from BMC's R/North Ward, said: "The skywalk on the western side of Dahisar has been shut by BMC and our bridge department is going to carry out repairing work, for which tendering is on. I will direct our officials to check as to why the general public still is using the skywalk."

"We have also asked the police to patrol and ensure that public don't use it. And I would like to appeal to citizens to not use the Dahisar skywalk on the western side. The skywalk at Dahisar's eastern side is safe to use," she added.

Animesh Vora, local resident from Dahisar, said: "There are hundreds of citizens using the skywalk which is unfit for use, and the BMC is sleeping."
