BMC doesn't seem to have learnt any lessons from last year's de-silting scam. The Shiv Sena-led Standing Committee, ridiculed the civic administration on Wednesday when the latter expressed the inability to explain where will the contractor dump the silt removed after the cleaning of drains in the city areas which are encroached.

The contractor has not mentioned in the proposal where he will dump the silt. Last year, the contractors faked the dumping sites and bills.

Corporators across the party lines in the Standing Committee demanded to know where the contractor was planning to dump the silt after cleaning the drains. While the civic administration is planning to dump the silt removed from the side drains at the ward level in the open plots of villages near Vasai, Panvel, Thane, Mahape, Taloja and Navi Mumbai, there was no clarity over the silt removed by the contractors.

The most shocking information was revealed by Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner, who said that the BMC has not kept any account where the contractor has dumped silt removed from major drains this year.

Deshmukh replying to a query raised by Asif Zakaria, member of Standing Committee and Congress corporator from Bandra, said that the information about where the contractor has dumped the silt removed from major drains is not available with the storm water drains department. The official will gather the information and present it in the next committee meeting.

This information did not go well with the members who were already upset with the indifferent attitude of the SWD department. "60 per cent of de-silting work should be completed by May 31, as per the proposal tabled by the administration. If the proposal is tabled on May 11, and that too with ill-equipped information. How is the administration expecting us to approve this proposal and take the city for granted. Flooding spots in the city have increased from last year. If the city floods this year, entire responsibility will be on municipal commissioner," said Vishwasrao.

Pravin Chheda pointed out that proposal has a clause which states that the vigilance department will ensure that the work is done as per the requirement. Ironically, the head of vigilance department was found guilty in both — de-silting scam and roads scam.
