Mumbaikars will have to experience the frayed expression - no pain, no gain — for the next few months as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun road repairs across the city. After the rains this year, the BMC prepared a list of 1,665 road works that need to be carried out across 24 civic wards of which 499 works have already commenced and 1,126 will begin soon. The deadline to complete the repair work is May 2018. Given the volume of the work undertaken by the BMC, there are concerns about meeting the deadline.

This year too the BMC couldn't meet the deadline of May 31 to re-surface all the roads that were taken up for repair. The civic body officials attribute the delay to the shut down of quarries in Navi Mumbai and the contractors couldn't complete all the repair work. According to a report in possession with DNA, the BMC completed 419 works of total 1,213 project roads works by May 2017. Under the Priority II road repairs, the BMC could complete only 115 roads of a total 584 roads, the report states.

According to the report, including south Mumbai, western and eastern suburbs, as on November 27, the BMC has already started project road works of 389 roads and junctions while the work on 763 roads and junctions are still pending. The BMC has already received a No-Objection certificate for 455 roads and junctions.

The report also states that the BMC has started repairs on 110 Priority II roads and work, but the work is yet to begin on 363 roads Priority II roads?) Since October 1, the BMC has completed repairs of 40 Priority II.

A senior officer from the roads department of the BMC said, "Before the rains, we could complete only a few road works due to the unavailability of quarries. We expect to complete roads works undertaken before May 31, 2018."
