City sees three incidents of drowning in a day, including two fishermen at Girgaum

Search operation by fire brigade was underway till late Monday night to trace the drowned persons

In three different incidents in the city, two persons died due to drowning, while two fishermen are suspected to have drowned in sea after their boat capsized near Girgaum Chowpatty on Monday. Search operation by fire brigade was underway till late Monday night to trace the drowned persons.

According to Pandurang Shinde, Senior Police Inspector, DB Marg police station, around 8 am on Monday, two fishermen who were sailing near Girgaum Chowpatty jumped in the sea after their fishing boat capsized.

Locals who had witnessed the incident claimed that the fishermen did not reach the shore after which they alerted the police, who then informed the fire brigade. “We have sought help of divers to trace fishermen,” said Shinde.

In another incident, body of  24-year-old Pawanjeet Kohli, a resident of Bandra, was found swept near Taj Lands End hotel at Bandra. The Bandra police revealed that the youth had committed suicide by jumping from the Sea Link on Sunday night.

“We suspect that the body was swept ashore due to high tides. A case of accidental death has been registered and further probe is on,” said a Bandra police officer.

While in Malwani, 24-year-old Dinesh Maurya died due to drowning when he went inside Ali Talao lake for a swim. As per Maurya’s family, he did not know swimming and hence would have drowned. The locals informed the police after which the fire brigade department was called to fish out the body.

Dipak Phatangare, Senior Inspector, Malwani police station, said, “Maurya’s body has been handed over to his family.”
