A forest in the middle of the metropolis — Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) — left the officials of the Belgium Consulate mesmerised. The rendezvous didn't stop there; the consulate's recent visit led the way for talks on a proposed tie-up between the Belgium Government and the Maharashtra Government, Forest Department officials said.

In fact, even Sudhir Mungantiwar, state Forest Minister, tweeted that they were aiming to turn SGNP into an international tourist destination and that Maharashtra government will tie-up with the Belgium government.

According to SGNP officials, though the meeting with Peter Huyghebaert, Consul General, Belgium, was informal, there was a lot of knowledge exchange. He was keen on understanding the biodiversity of the national park and its significance and also talked about extending his support for its development.

"The idea is to check the feasibility of bringing in their expertise to improve the existing facilities at SGNP, including the lion-tiger safari and the proposed leopard safari, along with other animal enclosures and an overall upgradation of tourist facilities, said a Forest Department official.

There was also a detailed discussion on the facilities and experiences provided by the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium, which is regarded as one of the best in Europe. There were also talks about facilitating a visit of Forest Department officials to Belgium to study the model of the zoo and gauge the feasibility of implementing the ideas at SGNP.

In an email response to DNA, Huyghebaert said, "The project is still too premature to publicise."
