Rains lashed the city and its adjoining areas on Tuesday even as Cyclone Ockhi moved towards south-southwest of Surat and 140 km west away from Mumbai. As per forecast of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai can expect some more rains on Wednesday morning.

The rains on Tuesday also were the highest ever recorded rains in December as Santa Cruz recorded 36.0mm (12 hrs) of rains beating the earlier record of 31.4 mm, which was reported in December 1967. In fact, these rains also added another record — that of the all-time high monthly rain. Monday and Tuesday added up to 58 mm of rains whereas the earlier record was of 1967 — 55.7mm.

“The cyclone never hit Mumbai and has now passed towards South Gujarat. However, the cloudy weather and rains are likely to continue up to Wednesday morning after which the temperatures that had substantially seen a drop will be back to normal,” said an IMD official.

Meanwhile, the December rains made people enjoy the sudden change in weather as maximum temperature dropped by almost 10 degree Celsius. “While the maximum temperature recorded at Colaba  was 32.8 degree Celsius on Monday, it dropped down to 23.2 degree Celsius on Tuesday. The maximum temperatures recorded at Santa Cruz dropped from 33.6 degree Celsius on Monday to 23.3 degree Celsius on Tuesday,” said an IMD official adding that this was the impact of the Cyclone and the maximum temperatures would soon begin going up from Wednesday.

According to BMC, there were two tree falls reported due the squally winds and rains in Mumbai — at Andheri and Ghatkopar.
