With trial runs of around 3,000 km remaining in the second phase of the Monorail between Wadala and Jacob Circle, there are serious doubts about whether Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials will be able to meet the December 2017 deadline set by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for its operation.

Fadnavis, in a written reply to a query by the Opposition during the budget session earlier this year, had said that MMRDA has been given December 2017 as the deadline and that the second phase of the Monorail will be made operational by the end of this year. However, on the ground, MMRDA is yet to begin its trial runs that are conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).

UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, "If all the formalities and the CRS trial runs are complete, we will commence the second phase by December 2017."

However, Sanjay Khandare, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, "We have started our initial procedure to approach the CRS for the trial runs and we are confident of making the second phase operational by December 2017."

Ever since the first phase was commissioned, the Monorail has been in the news for constant breakdowns in the rakes. Meanwhile the MMRDA floated bids last month to appoint a new operator for the entire corridor. Six companies, including the current Malaysian operator Scomi Engineering, showed interest in the bid.
