The ordeal for group of 25 doctors from Mumbai and their family members did not end in Shenzhen in China after they were allegedly confined and Rs 10 Lakhs was taken from them in cash before leaving for Macau. The group was again left stranded at Macau due to faulty trip itinerary given by the Mumbai-based tour agent.

DNA on Monday had reported about the nightmare faced by group of doctors and their family members from Malad Medical Association (MMA) on the trip to Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau. The 25 members group including the doctors and their family members had paid MMA who had hired Vinayak Zarekar, owner of Opex Tours and Travels to arrange the tour.

The group of doctors started their tour on May 16, when on May 20 the group of doctors and their family members were asked to check out of the hotel room at 9 am and were kept under watch in the hotel lobby.

DNA contacted the group of doctors in Hong Kong, Dr Sanjay Mehra, who is on the trip with his wife, Dr Shomu and their two daughters Disha,18 and Yosha,13.

"We had to collect Rs 10 Lakhs immediately if we had to leave the hotel room. So we made frantic calls for help and arranged the cash. The tour agent in China misbehaved with us and we were held as hostage with their three men keeping a watch on us," said Sanjay Mehra.

"The Malad Medical Association mismanaged the entire tour and the summer vacation which I had promised my children. We were harassed and humiliated and when we tried to seek help from the police in Shenzhen it too went in vain and we did not get any support from them," said Mehra.

For Dr Vilas Wade,51 and Dr Megha Wade,51 the tour was meant for relieving their stress but it has turned out to be a tour which they now want to forget, Dr Vilas Wade said, "Despite paying the entire money to the Malad Medical Association, the tour has been ruined and we have been mentally tortured let alone we enjoying in the whole tour."

"We could see the way the children were panicking. It was a horrible trip which we want to forget and move on in life", said Wade.

The ordeal for the group did not end, "We were flatly refused to enter the ferry which was supposed to take us from Macau to Hong Kong airport. We had to beg from the ferry service provider after he had denied us the services," said Dr. Mehra.

PASSING THE BUCK

  • Malad Medical Association now has passed the buck on the local tour agent, Dr.Hemal Bharucha, President of MMA, said, “We have earlier too dealt with the local tour operator in Mumbai and had faced no problems.”
