City architect Abha Narain Lambah among 20 shortlisted women for prestigious award

The awardee will be announced next month.

Mumbai-based heritage architect Abha Narain Lambah has been shortlisted among the 20 most prominent women in architecture for the arcVision Prize. Sometimes referred to as the 'Pritzker for women', the annual award recognises women whose work brings an innovative new design, theoretical or practical approach to the economic, social and cultural issues at play in the field of architecture. The awardee will be chosen in April.

Lambah said it was an honour to get shortlisted. "It will motivate us to innovate while preserving heritage structures. This award is not based on application. They choose the architect using their own resources," she said. Lambah has worked at several historic sites, including Buddhist monuments in Ladakh, Nainital Raj Bhawan, Viceregal Lodge in Shimla and medieval monuments in Hampi.

In Mumbai, the Abha Narain Lambah Associates has been involved in the restoration of 19th century public buildings, such as the Municipal Head Office, University Convocation Hall, Crawford Market, Old Secretariat, Sir JJ School of Art, Bombay High Court, Royal Opera House and Asiatic Library, as well as banks such as Tata Palace (Deutsche Bank), HSBC, Bank of India and Central Bank.

The other nominees include Basma Uraiqat Abdallah (Jordan), Ruth Berktold (Germany), Tania Concko (Netherlands), Sara de Giles Dubois (Spain), Dalila Elkerdany (Egypt), Petra Gipp (Sweden), Pat Hanson (Canada), Mao Harada (Japan), Amanda Levete (Great Britain), Salwa and Selma Mikou (France), Eva Castro and Ulla Hell (UK/China/Italy), Jennifer Siegal (US), Maria Menezes and Diana Nunes (Mozambique), Rena Sakellaridou and Morpho Papanikolaou (Greece), Twitee Vajrabhaya Teparkum (Thailand), Elisa Valero Ramos (Spain), Špela Videcnik (Slovenia/France), Marion Weiss (US) and Cazú Zegers (Chile).
