Some citizens' organisations in and around Bandra, the 'queen of the suburbs', have opposed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC's) proposal to allow rooftop restaurants atop commercial buildings in their backyard. H-ward Citizens' Trust and Khar Residents' Association have raised strong objections to this BMC proposal, made in the Development Plan (DP) 2034.

H-ward Citizen's Trust and Khar Residents' Association wrote a letter on Thursday to municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta, in which they said that such kinds of restaurants cause numerous problems not only for the elderly but also for the youth of the area. The letter also stated that these outlets cause a lot of noise pollution and traffic congestion and lead to an increase in crime. Anandini Thakoor, secretary, H-ward Citizens' Trust, said: "While some open-air restaurants already operate in the city without requisite permissions, once an official nod is granted by the BMC, the number of such establishments would only increase. The concentration of restaurants in Linking Road and the Union Park area is already high and we do not want the number to increase any further," Thakoor said. She further said that her organisation does not mind such rooftop restaurants in secluded areas, but added the such activities should not be allowed at any cost in residential premises.

The BMC's revised draft development plan for 2034 will allow for rooftop restaurants on the terraces of commercial buildings across the city. While many well-known rooftop restaurants currently exist in the city, the BMC has claimed that these are illegal as the present DP has no provision permitting the same.

The ruling parties in the BMC, the Shiv Sena and BJP, are already in disagreement over the issue of allowing rooftop restaurants in the city. Yuva Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray, who has been pitching for rooftop restaurants, tweeted about it on Wednesday saying, "I hope the government doesn't mandate rooftops to be allowed only during the day, as apparently even affordable eateries at night are a sin and immoral." However, political opponents see this move as an attempt to woo the youth and garner their votes during the civic elections.
