About one and a half years of hard work by Cidco will surface on December 4 when it launches its smart city project in the presence of top 98 municipal commissioners of the country in Vashi.

The function which will be attended by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will be of national importance as the smart city model prepared by the planning agency can be replicated in other parts of the country, claims Sanjay Bhatia, managing director and vice chairman of Cidco. Apart from affordable housing, infrastructures will also be developed for a population up to 25 lakh.

Since nodes falling under Cidco in Navi Mumbai could not be included in the smart city list of central government as Cidco is a town planning agency and not a municipal body, the agency decided to develop its nodes as smart city in its own. The project will be self-financed and Cidco will not take funds from the government.

While many cities included in the smart cities mission are still at the suggestion and objection stage, Cidco is much ahead in the race. "We have started the planning of smart city about one and a half years ago, and now a blue print is ready to execute," said Bhatia on the preparation for the development of its eight nodes.

Even as the launch of the project will take place on December 4, many of the works have already been done. "Normally, tenders are floated after the project is launched. But in our case, we have been working in the project for the last one and a half years quietly," added Bhatia. The trial of online project approval in Cidco is currently under way. This is believed to bring transparency in giving commencement certificate and occupation certificate of projects.

In addition, a number of economic drivers like mega infrastructure are coming up in Navi Mumbai in the next one decade. "Navi Mumbai has become a hub of economic activities, not just in Maharashtra but also in the country, as a number of mega infrastructure projects are on the pipeline," said Bhatia. He added that these projects will take city's growth to several decades ahead.
