In its recently-submitted inquiry report, the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said that the murder of suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Qateel Mohammed Siddiqui inside Pune’s Yerwada Central Jail on June 8 was planned.

“The incident certainly did not take place at the spur of a moment,” confirmed a senior CID official. He, however, could not reveal much about the report as it has been sent to the home minister.

While the Pune city police are investigating the case, the CID report, prepared after a separate probe by its own officers, has observed that a number of loopholes in the jail’s security arrangements led to Qateel’s murder.

Named in the German Bakery blast in Pune, Delhi’s Jama Masjid firing case and the Bangalore terror attacks, Qateel was found murdered inside his cell, allegedly by Sharad Mohal and Amol Bhalerao, who were charged under MCOCA. The duo, who was  lodged in the anda cell since February 2012, later confessed having killed Qateel because of his involvement in anti-national activities.
