Over 200 residents of Churchgate are receiving extremely contaminated water for the last 10 days. The residents of Moti Mahal and Prem Court are fuming over the supply of contaminated drinking water as it is the sixth time in the past one year that the has occured.

Ashwin Nagpal, a resident of Moti Mahal said, “We are forced to use bottled water for household chores. While, some use the same for bathing but that is expensive. People who risked using tap water, have contracted skin rashes and some have fallen ill”.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A ward, Kiran Dighavkar said, “The problem is going on for many days and we are finding out solutions. On roads leading to Churchgate at several locations, undeground pipes are damaged. Most likely as the pipelines are very old, they are damaged. We are trying hard to find the exact locations to rectify the contamination but due to concrete roads it is taking time”.

Nagpal said, “Last year also several times we recieved contaminated water which was due to Metro work. Then Metro engineers said that they have rectified problems and will take precautions that no underground utilities are damaged. However, this time the Metro engineers have rejected that there is any damage from their side. But, it is true that several drains, sewage lines and also water lines are damaged and has further caused contamination”.

Dighavkar also added, “We don’t think this time the water contamination is due to Metro work. However, we will still try to find out”.

DNA reported on September 19 and 27, in 2017, that Churchgate residents are irked over polluted water and Metro officials had promised that they are examining the cause and are trying to resolve the issue with BMC’s help.
