The Catholic community in Kandivali has organised a ‘Protest Morcha’ on Saturday (today) against notice served to the Our Lady of Remedy Church in Poisar by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The BMC’s notice seeks acquisition of the church’s land for its road widening project. The protest campaign is organised by Save Our Land (SOUL), the Bombay Catholic Sabha, Guardians United, Watchdog Foundation and All India Catholic Union (Maharashtra).

The protest is organised at 10 am outside Our Lady of Remedy Church and march from SV Road to BMC’s R/South ward office. Around 1000 people across the city are expected to join the protest.

The Christian community in Kandivali has been protesting against the civic body’s decision saying “Not an Inch of our Land will be given” and since this is their third protest since last six months. However, today’s protest will have Catholic community people across the city, the organisers say. “The issue of open land acquision by BMC is not limited to Kandivali, the corporation may slam notices to other church’s open spaces also”, said Dolphy D’Souza, spokesperson of SOUL. SOUL had also protested on the same issue on December 25, 2016 too.

“The Goadevi road which the BMC want to widen is already wide enough and does not have heavy traffic as compared to SV Road and widening of SV Road is need of the hour. So why is the Municipal Corporation giving priority to the Goandevi Road”, D’souza questions the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Ashok Khaire.

D’souza also alleges that the Municipal Corporation is interested in the Gaondevi road widening to provide a better access road to the Mayfair builder who has a 32 floored tower at the end of the same road. However, Ashok Khaire rejected all the allegations and said, “We are undertaking other road widening projects in the ward. Recently we completed three and we are proceeding. The Mayfair tower has other good access roads and Gaondevi is not the only road. According to the High Court’s order a couple of months back, we are seeking aquisition land behind the burial ground within the church premises and the Cross”.

However, D’souza said that the matter is still sub-judiced and final order is not passed. He also complained that we requested the DMC in written to meet personally and have a discussion on the matter, but he ignored. However, Khaire said that the community people have met him couple of times and he explained him about the road widening project.
