Wednesday's cold was harsh on rail commuters travelling on Central and Western Railways. Due to drop in temperatures the rail tracks cracked. There were three rail fractures, one near Sion, Mulund and Vashi. There was another rail fracture at Palghar as well. This delayed local and long distance trains in the morning hours.

All four rail fractures took place in the morning peak hours which led to severe delays of local trains. The first one happened at around 8 am between Kurla and Sion. This affected the trains running on fast line towards Thane. The Central Railway officials then diverted the trains to the slow line which led to bunching as they queued up one behind the other.

The issue was sorted by 8.30am. Even as work to replace the broken rail piece was being carried out, there was another rail fracture at around 8.20am at platform 1 of Vashi station. This affected the trains on the Thane-Vashi trans-harbour section though the number of passengers travelling on this route are comparatively less. The issue was sorted by 8.30am.

"The temperatures have dropped severely over the past few days. Unable to take the climatic pressure. the weaker portion of the metal cracked," said a CR official.

Usually, if rail fracture occurs during peak hours, they clam the broken rail pieces together which holds them. During non-peak hours the damaged rail piece is replaced with a new one. Around the same time, there was a rail fracture near Boisar. This delayed the local trains on Dahanu-Virar stretch and long distance trains towards Gujarat. The situation was normalised within 20 minutes.

The fourth fracture took place at 9.05am between Mulund and Thane stations. This happened on the slow line; again affecting trains towards Kalyan. The trains were diverted while work was being carried out and rectified by 9.25am. The trains ran at least 30 minutes late in the morning due to the rail fractures.
