The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked Mumbai police chief Sanjay Barve to register a first information report against a city-based trust for allegedly organising an evangelist programme at a civic school.

In a letter of September 16, Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson of NCPCR, said the police should look into a CD that they have sent along and take forward the case against New Life Fellowship Association.

"You are requested to lodge FIR as per provisions of Law and Investigate the said video in relation to the complainant. An action taken report may please be submitted to this Commission within 07 working days from the receipt of this letter. The report should include the statements of the students/parents who had attended the said activity," reads the letter.

Sanjay Barve did not respond to calls and messages. Pranav Ashok, deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai police PRO, said, "We will check and revert."

According to the person whose complaint was the trigger for the letter from NCPCR, the programme was held on September 1 at a Worli school. Following objections, the police intervened.

"However, later we came across a video showing a man keeping his hand on a woman's head. She was screaming on top of her voice as if she had been tortured. The organisers were claiming about their ability to heal people," said the complainant, who did not wish to be named. He said such evangelical programmes promote superstition and black magic.

The complainant said New Life has a licence under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act but its activities go against the FCRA norms. The organisation received Rs 3 crore from the US in 2018-19 and the first quarter of this financial year, he said.

"We will also approach the home ministry for registration of a case against the trustees of the organisation," he said. Representatives of New Life could not be reached for comment.
