In a shocking incident, a one-and-half-year-old girl died of suffocation on Monday afternoon after a fire broke out at an unauthorised structure built on top of the water pump room of a building at Perry Cross Road in Bandra. The elder sister of the deceased also got injury in the fire and she has been admitted in Holy Family hospital in Bandra where her condition is said to be critical.

The baby girl identified as Didi ShankarBahadur Dhanu was sleeping when the fire broke out due to short circuit. "The one-and-half-year-old was taken to Holy Family Hospital in Bandra. However, she was declared dead on arrival due to suffocation, probably caused by the fumes," said an official from Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).

According to official from the MFB, the fire started in a small 120 sq feet structure that was constructed above the pump room of Shoeb Manzil building, located along Perry Cross Road in New Kanta Wadi in Bandra (west).
"The society had constructed the illegal structure above the pump room to provide accommodation to the watchman of the building," said the official.

When the incident took place, both the children were at home while the watchman and his wife were out for work. "The younger one died of suffocation, while elder one received burn injuries and also suffocation," said the official.

Elder girl identified as Uma Shankar Bahadur Dhanu is four years old and she has been admitted in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Holy Family Hospital. Dr Deepak Patil, resident doctor of Holy Family Hospital, said that the condition of the child is critical. "At present, she is in PICU and in the next eight hours, we will check her condition and accordingly start required medication," said the doctor.

The cause of the fire is believed to be shot circuit in electrical wires. "The household articles in the makeshift structure fuelled the fire," added the official. The fire call was received at around 12.02 pm, while the fire officials reached at around 12.30 pm. However, the fire was already doused by locals.
