Mumbai Fire Brigade's chief fire officer Sunil Nesarikar, who had suffered 50% burn injures in Kalbadevi fire-fighting operation on May 9, passed away at 3.30 pm at National Burns Centre in Airoli on Sunday, confirmed fire officials.
While speaking to dna, a senior fire official said that the death of their chief has come as a shock. “He was recovering and we thought he will come out of it,” said the official.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's public relation office has meanwhile sent a message that they will soon update the media on Nesarikar's funeral and guard of honour.
Nesarikar and three other fire officers- Sudhir Amin, MN Desai and SW Rane were caught in the building debris while a part of the building collapsed during the fire fighting. While Desai and Rane died before getting medical attention, Amin died a week later at NBC. According to the doctor treating Nesarikar, he had inhaled smoke and injured his lungs apart from the 50% burn injuries.
At NBC, Nesarikar underwent two surgeries- one to restore the blood supply in the injured part and second was major skin grafting in his lower extremes. “We were planning second major skin grafting surgery on him where we have to remove the dead skins before going for skin grafting. We had to postpone the surgery as he had fever. We were suppose to have his skin grafting surgery today,” said Dr Sunil Keswani.
