The organisers of a Chhath puja event in Nallasopara ran into trouble with the police on Monday, after the latter registered a case of obscenity on a complaint that an orchestra bar's dancers and transgenders performed obscene dance steps to Bhojpuri songs on a stage. However, the fact that the stage had pictures of Chhatrapati Shivaji and other Goddesses added fuel to the fire.

The matter was reported to the police by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) partyworkers. The organizers—Hindi Bhasha Vikas Mandal in Moregaon of Nallasopara (East)—invited hundreds of devotees for the Chhath puja celebrations, which kicked off with prayers to Goddesses and salutations to Chhatrapati Shivaji and other national icons. Later, to entertain the crowd, the organisers invited the dancers on stage.

"The organizers, under the excuse of celebrating the festival, not only insulted Shivaji Maharaj, but also forgot that the pictures of Goddesses were on the same stage on which the bar dancers and transgenders were performing," said Jayendra Patil, President of MNS' Vasai unit.

"The crowd passed lewd comments and even started whistling and performing obscene dance steps. The sad part is no one stopped them as the majority of them were drunk. The transgenders and the bar girls wore indecent clothes during the puja and were performing obscene steps to entertain the crowd that also comprised minors," said Patil.

After the matter was reported to the police, Anil Akade, DyvSp for Vasai region said, "We will look into the matter and a case will be registered against the people who organised the event".

Later in the day, the police registered a case against the event's organisers and a DJ under IPC sections 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 34 (acts done by several person in furtherance of common intention).
