Chembur's Vivekanand Education Society (VES) on Saturday adopted a zero waste system in its sprawling campus. The school initiated the 'Zero Waste Campus Project' in association with the state education department and NGO Stree Mukti Sanghatana, thus aligning with the goals of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

VES inaugurated four compost pits for green and kitchen waste on the campus.

While inaugurating the compost pits, VES's secretary Amar Asrani said, "It is hoped that this first step would be the beginning of a series of activities in the campus by the Zero Waste Volunteers, that would ultimately make sustainability a way of life on campus."

Stree Mukti Sanghatana member Rashmi Joshi said that a key component of the initiative was a plan to educate students about composting and recycling. The school put up posters in the campus with strong messages on waste segregation, and on stopping littering within the campus.

An enthusiastic student said, "I am very happy to know that our institution is the first one to have a zero waste project." Another student, Rebecca D'souza said, "The training program enlightened us about the best practices for reducing the waste brought on campus, and effective strategies to drive reuse and recycling of materials."
