Amar Punjabi resident of Mithul Enclave Society at Chembur, and his three family members were in a state of shock when the hall in their living room caved in almost three to four feet on 25th March midnight. The family is too scared to stay in that flat after the incident. However the BMC M-east ward officer claims the building is safe to stay as per their observation.

The family is still to recover from the scary scenes of the night when the mishap happened. A wooden sofa fell on Sanjana the youngest sister of Punjabi who was holding her seven month old baby. She fell on the caved in floor and the baby survived miraculously. However, Sanjana dislocated her right shoulder. The family had to relocate to a relative's place after the incident.

The police family claims has refused to register a case. "We went to RCF police station to file a case against whoever is responsible for it. But they refuse to file. My question to the authorities is will the case be filed only when one looses life?" said Bharti Punjabi, sister in law of Amar.

" Despite such massive damage the officials of BMC M-east ward are not submitting any report whether its safe for us to stay despite repeated request," said Amar Punjabi.

Amar's daughter Rania who is class VIII student is also disturbed with this incident as her school exams had started when the incident occurred.

The society office bearers are not supporting the family's claim of the building being structurally unsafe.

Laxman Tandel, Secretary of society where Punjabi stays, said, "The buildings are not unsafe as we did a structural audit from BMC two years back. It just need major repairs which we have started. There is also a general body meeting on 8 April when we will deliberate the issue."

To increase the family's woes the BMC is refusing to help.

Sambhaji Ghag, ward officer of M-east ward, said, "Our official went and checked the site and we don't feel that the building is unsafe. But we don't understand what kind of construction was done by the builder that led to this mishap in Punjabi's flat. The building is just 20 year old and cannot be unsafe."
