A 21-year-old man, Vinay Madan Lamba, from Chembur hit a constable while reversing his Skoda car (MH04DW 2541). In fact, the constable had flagged him down and asked for his driver's licence when he reversed and fled towards Thane railway station after hitting the cop. While escaping, Lamba also hit 12 to 15 auto-rickshaws parked in a lane, besides ramming into a rick driver, who suffered a fracture in one of his hands.

The incident took place between 7.30pm and 8pm when Lamba drove from Jambli Naka to Tower Naka to Thane station road towards Teen Haath Naka. The accused was finally caught by a traffic constable and locals at Teen Haath Naka.

"We were at Thane station road when we saw the car coming menacingly towards us. We stepped aside but the car hit a number of rickshaws and proceeded towards Teen Haath Naka. We got on to the bike of a local and asked him to follow the Skoda car. As we followed the car, we saw people pelting stones at the vehicle, damaging its windows. However, instead of stopping, Lamba drove faster," said traffic constable Nilesh Dhutre.

A police officer from Thanenagar police station said, "The two had come to the Viviana mall for shopping. While going back, Lamba started driving in the wrong direction. A traffic constable on duty stopped him and asked for his licence, following which the whole drama unfolded. We have recorded the statement of Lamba and the girl who was accompanying him. The accused has identified himself to be the son of the owner of Madan Motors in Chembur. Further investigation is on."
