Charkop's Sector 8 has been in the news for the constant problems relating to its mangroves, for which the residents have been fighting relentlessly. However, for last few months, new problmes have cropped up for whch the residents met with cops.

Traffic nuisance

On August 5, members of the Charkop Sector 08 Vikas Samiti visited Milind Bharambe Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) to discuss various grievances relating to Sector 8. Among the things discussed during the visit, Bharambe chalked out a plan of action as to what can be done to tackle the rampant over speeding of bikes and cars in the area.
Mili Shetty, chief coordinator of the Samiti, said, “He (Bharambe) told us that he will ensure that a traffic signal pole is installed at the Sector 8 junction after he coordinates with the ward for the installation of traffic signals. It’s been more than four months now but not much has been done; Mrs. Bhosale from the Kandivali Traffic department has not been forthcoming.” The over speeding of bikes has also led to many severe accidents in the neighbourhood as certain individuals do not drive at the prescribed speeds. This has also led to senior citizens fearing for their lives while they walk on the roads.

Drug peddling

A building in Sector 8 is infamous for its by-lanes that are frequented by unknown cars that peddle drugs to youngsters in the area. Residents are worried as this can prove to be quite dangerous for the residents. A resident from the same area, on the condition of anonymity, shared, “I have seen cars frequenting our neighbourhood at specific times and handing over things to a bunch of youngsters. This young lot then smokes it up in the nearby by-lane.” The Samiti had got the police to patrol in the area but they did it only for a few days.

Illegal hawkers

Illegal hawkers have long been the bane of the entire city; but no matter where they are, it’s always the residents who have to face the nuisance. Like any other part of the city, here too, illegal hawkers that are backed by various political parties conduct their businesses and the residents are harassed. Despite lodging complaints on several occasions, the hawkers conduct their businesses fearlessly.
