Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have come under the scanner of residents of Charkop sector 8 after a local alleged that she saw the staff (BMC sweepers) throwing garbage into the mangroves over a boundary wall right in front of her house.

Residents have been up in arms against officials, alleging that garbage and trash collected after sweeping the road was being tossed into the mangroves daily.

On Saturday morning, social activist Mili Shetty whose house faces the mangroves said that she saw the staff conveniently throwing the garbage into the mangroves and while she could not photograph the person doing it, she managed to click a bin and broom kept near the wall along with trash lying on it.

"I am tired of complaining to the ward office and hence decided to take the matter up this issue with the Municipal Commissioner and hence I immediately sent him an email complaining about this nuisance as this had become a regular affair and its not only me but several other residents from my building who have clicked pics and sent it to me," she said adding that it was shocking that despite it being made clear by even courts that dumping in mangroves was illegal, the BMC staff itself was breaking the law.

Another resident from Charkop sector 8 said that while BMC was to be blamed for using mangrove land as dumping ground, citizens were to be blamed equally. "There are people who dump all sorts of debris, furniture and other garbage from their homes into the mangrove patch. Unfortunately, despite lodging so many complaints with MHADA and BMC to clear the trash and debris, nothing has been done yet," said the resident.

When contacted, a BMC official said sweepers have been clearly instructed not to dump the trash collected after sweeping but to collect it in the bin and dispose it as instructed. "We will look into the matter if there is such a complaint," said an official.
