The Special women's court on Thursday framed charges against Chandrabhan Sanap, who is accused of raping and killing a 23-year-old techie, Esther Anhuya, in January 2014. The court has slapped the accused with seven charges, of which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution on July 15 had filed draft charges against Sanap. Special public prosecutor, advocate Raja Thakre, while speaking to dna said, "The advocate appearing on behalf of the accused had opposed the prosecution accusing Sanap of rape charges, however we produced evidence in the form of extra judicial confessional statements, which, at the initial stage of investigation, proved that the accused had allegedly raped the young girl, before setting her on fire."

The court thus slapped Sanap with charges of committing murder, rape, as well as two sections of kidnapping, committing dacoity, destruction of evidence and pretending to appear as a public servant.

As per the prosecution's case, on January 5, Esther went missing from the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla. After spending Christmas and New Year with her family in Andhra Pradesh, Esther was returning to Mumbai, where she was working with Tata Consultancy Services. However, after reaching LTT, Esther went missing. On January 16, her decomposed body was found dumped in the mangroves near the Eastern Express Highway in Kanjurmarg.

On March 2, the crime branch arrested Sanap, a resident of Sai Society at Karve Nagar in Kanjur Marg.
