The Central Railway (CR) is worried over frequent road accidents below the rail over bridge located at Kings circle near Sion. It is now planning to build a height barrier at the start of flyovers on both Sion and Dadar ends within the next 20 days.

Early on Tuesday, road traffic on Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road was affected after a trailer rammed into the rail over bridge that connects Kings Circle station and Mahim station. The incident happened at around 5.45 am. The truck driver was identified as Sandeep Thaple.

In August last year, there was a similar accident, when a trailer rammed into the same rail bridge and dismantled the height barrier. "Since then the barricade hasn't been replaced. This is very dangerous for the rail bridge above," said activist Nikhil Desai, who lives nearby.

Truck drivers pay little heed to the low height space under the rail bridge. The Kings Circle station was thrown open to public in 1942 and connects the Harbour line with the Western line. The rail bridge passes over the Eastern Express Highway.

"I have been writing to the Railways, BMC and traffic police to install a height barrier at the start of the flyover. However there seems to be total lack of coordination among these departments," said Gaurang Damani, civic activist.

Sources said that the BMC has refused to build the height barrier and has asked the CR to construct one. "The traffic police are permitting us to construct the height gauge before the bridge on both sides of this rail bridge. It will come within 20 days," said SK Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), CR.

The trailer was south bound and was heading towards the flyover near Aurora theatre. On this three lane highway connecting the Eastern Express Highway, one lane of the road is slightly elevated. And there is a rail over bridge running perpendicular to it, which leads to the Kings Circle station. According to Traffic Police, the road traffic was severely jammed right upto Chembur was severely jammed until 9.30 am.

Police said that they have registered a case against the driver for rash and negligent driving and causing damage to public property. The driver said that he misjudged the height of the bridge and thought the vehicle would be able to pass under it.
