At least four persons are still feared to be trapped inside the debris of Crystal Business Park building in Chandivali that collapsed during demolition work on Saturday evening. Rescue operation continued till late Sunday night, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Saki Naka police officials and BMC officials present at the site.

One person was found dead while three were rescued on Saturday after the incident.

ND Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police of Zone 10, confirmed that four persons were still missing.

Ajitkumar Ambi, Assistant Commissioner, L-ward, said, "The rescue operation is likely to continue for the next 24 hours."

Ambi added: "People are claiming that there is a possibility that more persons may be trapped but no one coming forward with details."

According to BMC's Disaster Control Department, demolition work was underway at Crystal Business Park building, a vacated structure, on Saturday. While the top 11 floors of the building were already demolished, the work to demolish the remaining seven floors was underway when the mishap took place, trapping workers hired by a private contractor to carry out the demolition.

On Saturday, four JCB's were being used to carry out the demolition work on the seventh floor when one of the JCB came crashing down around 5.15 pm. According to senior police official, excessive weight of the JCB machines had caused the incident. The JCB had come crashing down on the second floor. At the time of the mishap, a total of 14 persons were believed to be carrying out the demolition work inside the building.

Teams of Fire Brigade and Quick Response Vehicles were immediately rushed to the site and started the rescue operations which continues till late Sunday night.

Reddy said, "A private contractor was appointed by the builder for carrying out demolition work and a new building was to be constructed at the spot. So far, we have registered an accident death report in the matter. Those injured were rushed to Rajawadi hospital. Our inquiry is on and necessary action will be taken after conducting a thorough inquiry." he added that they would book the persons responsible for the building collapse and death of one person. However, the priority is to rescue people trapped inside.

Ambi said that the permission for demolition was given by SRA as the building was under its jurisdiction. However, there is no response from the SRA on civic body's claim.
