The Central Railway’s (CR) ‘lifesaver’ foot overbridge at Vidyavihar station is almost ready. Significant work on the bridge was completed on Saturday-Sunday midnight with the girders put in place above the tracks.

“The major work of girders etc. has been completed and the bridge should soon be ready for use,” a site engineer said.

The new foot overbridge which lands a few yards away from the gates of Rajawadi Hospital is expected to reduce the golden hour of accident victims along the six-kilometre stretch between Vikhroli and Kurla stations.

In emergency medicine, golden hour is the time period lasting from a few minutes to several hours following traumatic injury, during which there is strong likelihood that prompt medical treatment will prevent death. It is well established that a victim’s chances of survival are highest if they receive care within this short period of time.

dna had reported in December 2011 that CR had been working on a plan to build a bridge at the north end of Vidyavihar station which would be of immense help to rail accident victims.

According to Government Railway Police (GRP) officials, often bleeding road and rail accident victims are brought to the trauma centre of the Rajawadi Hospital from Vidyavihar station’s south end by an ambulance or an auto. “But the new bridge at the north end closer to the hospital will be of great help. More so for victims who fall or get injured in the vicinity,” a senior official said.

The bridge starts from the west side of Vidyavihar beside Jolly Gymkhana and lands near Chittaranjan Garden in the east next to Rajawadi Hospital.

The railway police said the access to Rajawadi hospital had so far been limited from one side via MG Road but now the new bridge will open up access from the other side.

“The bridge will also give the much-needed pedestrian thoroughfare between east and west which was demanded by commuters and residents of the area,” said a local activist.
