In the biggest move so far on redevelopment of railway stations to bring in revenue, Central Railway has put 33 stations on the redevelopment path. The railway invited Expression of Interest (EoI) on Friday from the private sector to come forward with plans on how the land and air-space around and above stations the can be monetized.
The stations listed for redevelopment in Mumbai are Dadar, Kalyan, Thane, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Panvel and Lonavala. The stations in other cities under CR's jurisdiction up for redevelopment include Pune, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Nasik, Solapur and Amravati.
"These stations have acres of space that is not required for operational purposes (works like laying tracks or stabling lines to park trains). So going for commercial redevelopment of these land parcels and also going vertical above stations will create what we believe will be perennial self - sustainable station complexes" said a senior CR official.
