In a bid to attract more commuters into buying tickets using mobile phones, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has begun sticking QR codes at stations, starting from CSMT. This is being done so that people can scan it after coming to the booking counter of railway stations. This provision is to simplify the process of buying tickets through mobile phones, which until now has not garnered much response from people.
As per process, people who have downloaded the UTS app of Indian Railways, have to go the station, scan the QR code which shall open the ticket booking page of the app. Destination has be put and money for the ticket paid which would generate the e-ticket. The officials said that at present many people do not use the UTS app, due to poor network connection.
On an average there are only 9416 tickets bought using mobile ticketing for 12500 passengers on the Central Railway while on the Western Railway, 7158 mobile tickets are sold that is used by 9900 passengers every day.
“We want to make it simpler for people to use the UTS app. At present, we have started it on trial basis at 10 stations on both railways together,” said Uday Bobate, General Manager, CRIS.
The stations where the QR code has been pasted next to booking counters are Byculla, Dadar, Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan, Churchgate, Bandra, Andheri and Borivali. The officials from CRIS said that they have improved the firewall, ensuring that commuter gets to display his mobile ticket despite being off-line and are addressing other issues that trouble people. The contribution of mobile ticketing is less than 1 percent against that of those being sold at ticket windows and through automatic ticket vending machines.
