To check waterlogging this monsoon, the Central Railway has begun removing garbage and muck from rail tracks and clears out some 8,300 sacks carrying 250 cubic metre of trash each day.

Garbage is the primary reasons behind clogging of culverts and gutters on railway premises, which leads to flooding on tracks and disruption of services.

“As per our calculations, there is around 1.60 lakh cubic metre of garbage next to the rail tracks. This cannot be cleared before February 2019,” said a CR official.

The pre-monsoon cleaning work has begun almost a month before it normnally does. This year, the railways and BMC have made field visits as well to identify areas are prone to garbage and flooding.

The CR is running four trains every day to carry the junk. In past weeks, CR removed 60,000 cubic metre, or, or 20 lakh gunny bags of trash.
