Adoption of rainwater harvesting will help Central Railway save 40% water that is currently being used at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

"Rapid urbanisation has resulted in decrease in rainwater seepage into the sub soil drastically, thus diminishing groundwater recharge. We have adopted rainwater harvesting as a part of finding solution to the ever-increasing water needs," said a CR official.

At LTT, the CR has identified the area and dug a 2,000-meter trench, filling it with crushed stone of different grading. The cost has been just Rs10 lakh, but the annual savings will be Rs1.44 crore.

This rainwater harvesting project will help in catering to 40% requirement of the daily 18-lakh-litre need at LTT, thus conserving water.

Water is majorly used round the clock to wash trains at the maintenance facility, refilling of tanks inside coaches, etc.

Rainwater harvesting also helps in reducing flooding during the rainy season as well as increasing the water table of surrounding area and recharging groundwater with fresh water.

The CR has already installed rainwater harvesting at 50 different locations — railway stations, maintenance sheds and a few colonies — in the last five years.
