It takes one upright official to transform the face and fate of a city. Vasai-Virar has got just that in superintendent of police Sharda Raut, who in a short span of eight months has not only given a shot in the arm to the law & order situation in her jurisdiction, but also drawn a master plan for the betterment of citizens' lives.

From slapping four MCOCA cases and nailing 29 accused to curb the incidence of organised crime in Palghar district, to enrolling over 5,000 alert citizens as the eyes and ears of the police. Raut has worked across the spectrum to bring about a positive change in her domain.

"Since I took charge in May last year, my approach to policing has been of being tough on criminals and sensitive to the citizens," says the no-nonsense IPS officer, who has raised 39 proposals to extern anti-social elements from the society. Raut has been equally tough with fellow policemen who have shown dereliction of duty, suspending as many as 45 defaulters and bringing another 170 to book for action. "Policing begins at home. Unless we set our own house in order, how can be inspire confidence among the people," says Raut, adding that on an administrative level there is a plan to create three new police stations and two posts of deputy SPs to streamline the policing in the district.

The municipal corporation of Vasai-Virar, with a population of nearly 25 lakh, remains her biggest challenge. "After conducting detailed studies, we have finalised the plan to install CCTV cameras at 106 spots and traffic signals at 45 key junctions. The corporation is in the process of allotting tenders and these initiatives will go a long way in improving policing and easing lives of the residents," said Raut.

She added that even on the front of industrial security and coastal security in her jurisdiction, new vehicles and more manpower has been roped in for better mobilisation. From surprise drunk driving campaigns and crackdowns on criminals to systematic beat marshall deployment and cycle patrolling, Raut's innovative policing methods are bringing about a visible change in Palghar district.

"We just hope that she continues to work here for at least another two years so that all her initiatives are properly implemented and we can actually stay in a place with law & order," said Vasai-resident Sheldon Fernandes.
