This year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) wants to focus on accessible, quality and holistic education for students in a safe learning environment, and Youtube constitutes a key role in this agenda.

The board has issued a circular stating the key areas it wants its schools to focus on. These include empowerment programmes for principals and teachers, assessment of speaking and listening skills and online support.

The board is encouraging schools to upload videos of various learning activities conducted within the school on their own Youtube channels.

Students have to submit original videos of the activities they have conducted. These can be short films, role plays, talks, discussions, debates, presentations or any related activity. The board has a few themes it would like students to focus on, such as health and wellness, gender sensitivity, community outreach, life skills, value education, heritage, disaster management, social issues, environmental issues and concerns, innovative teaching and learning methodologies.

"This is a very good initiative by the board. As children today are tech savvy they will be keen to have such a platform to observe and learn. They can see the activities of children from other schools, and will have a platform to bond. As children can access these channels on their own it will be easier for them to be updated by the activities or uploads on Youtube," says Rakesh Joshi, Apeejay School, Nerul.

As per the circular, CBSE wants students to have an inclusive, self-learning environment that will help give students more exposure and motivation. Last year, the focus was on creating socio-environment consciousness.

More focus on North East
CBSE schools have been asked to intensify focus on India's northeastern states. The board is adopting themes for the development of course materials and project-based activities about the seven states. In the upcoming All India CBSE Heritage Quiz Competition, 25% questions are based on the states. The brochure of this quiz has a centre page dedicated to the marvels in the region. A filmmaking contest on the boards anvil also focuses on the same. The five topics that the participants have to chose from are based on North East itself.
