The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday arrested a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai and his two accomplices for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 3 crore from a Mumbai-based businessman in a tax assessment case.

The accused has been identified as Jaipal Swamy, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, and his two accomplices as Kamlesh Shah and Prathamesh Masdekar.

According to CBI officials, Swamy had recently allegedly demanded Rs 3 crore from the complainant to give him an undue favour in his tax assessment. The CBI officials said a trap was then laid by them and one of the accomplices was caught red-handed by the officials while accepting two cheques from the complainant.

On questioning the accomplice, the accused revealed that he along with another accomplice of Swamy were given the task of accepting cheques and converting the bribe money into gold. After making the first arrest, Swamy and his another accomplice were arrested by officials on Friday from Aaykar Bhavan.

"We had received a complaint following which the trap was laid and the accused were arrested. A case has been registered for demanding an illegal gratification amounting to Rs 3 crore from the complainant," said a CBI official.
