After four years of probe, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a closure report in the murder case of RTI activist Satish Shetty. The agency claims that they could not find enough prosecutable evidence against any of the accused.

Shetty was murdered on January 13, 2010, near his house in Talegaon area of Pune, when he was sitting at a kiosk, in between his morning walk. He was stabbed on his head, neck, temple and hands by the assailants, who then disappeared from there and remain untraceable. Pune rural police investigated the case and later transferred it to the CBI after the slain activist's brother, Sandeep Shetty, moved the Bombay HC.

"CBI investigated the case for around four years and could not find sufficient prosecutable evidence against any of the accused persons. Subsequent to this, a closure report was filed," said CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad.

However, CBI is re-investigating another complaint of landgrab filed by Satish, against Virendra Mhaiskar, chairman and managing director of Mumbai-based Ideal Road Builders Infratrusture Limited. Last week, Bombay HC referred the case to the CBI on the agency's request.

"This case is also said to have some relation with the case of Satish Shetty's murder that was investigated by the CBI. If new evidence comes to notice, the CBI will re-open the investigation," she added.

In 2009, Shetty had written to Pune police seeking protection, claiming to be threatened by Mhaiskar. Shetty had extensively used RTI to expose the alleged connivance of bureacrats with IRB and its subsidiaries, in preparing fake documents to claim ownership of govt land.

The slain activist had also filed a complaint with Lonavla city police against 13 people, including Mhaiskar and a sub-registrar, alleging land grab. The local police has also filed the closure report in the case twice, saying that there was no evidence to substantiate Shetty's allegations.
