The 24-year-old driver, who sped away with Rs 1.28 crore in the ATM cash van that he was driving, was arrested late on Friday, hours after committing the crime.

Amar Singh, was arrested by the crime branch at Kalyan station. He was planning to flee to his native place in Bihar. A part of the total loot amount was recovered from Singh at the station while the remaining amount was retrieved from his CBD Belapur residence, according to crime branch officers. The investigating team informed that Singh had spent a part of the money to buy a phone, clothes and shoes for himself and his relatives.

"The crime branch was pressed into action after the offence was registered on Friday afternoon. The officers of the property cell got information from their informers that Singh was to come to Kalyan station to escape to Bihar," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni. "We laid a trap for Singh and when he reached Kalyan station, we arrested him. He was carrying part of the loot along with him while the rest he had kept at his residence in Belapur which he thought to collect some months later."

During interrogation, Singh revealed that he had been planning the heist for months. "He had been planning the robbery since his parents were under debt. He was planning to move to a new city and start his own business," said DCP Kulkarni. "Singh had joined the company where he was employed as a driver just three months ago, and had not provided any identity documents to the company. He had also recently shifted his residence due to which no one from the company knew where he resided." The police have not ruled out the involvement of other people in the robbery.

On Friday afternoon, Singh along with one guard and three employees of Logicash Solutions Private Limited left from their CBD Belapur office with Rs 1.42 crore in the ATM cash van. The money was to be deposited at various ATMs across the city. However, when the three employees along with the guard went to an ATM at Trombay to deposit the money, leaving the cash-loaded GPS-fitted van in Singh's custody, he drove away the money. The company, which had been tracking the van's route, found its movement suspicious and immediately alerted the police, which carried out nakabandi and patrolling in the area of Sion and Matunga. Hours later, a team from Matunga police found the van abandoned near Don Bosco School. Singh had disappeared with the money by then. A case of robbery and criminal breach of trust has been registered against Singh at Trombay police station.
