Case filed against Ram Gopal Varma for 'poking fun at Lord Ganesha'

A criminal complaint has been filed against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in the Andheri metropolitan magistrate court alleging that he had hurt religious sentiments of people by poking fun at Lord Ganesha with his Twitter comments.

The magistrate has posted the complaint for hearing on September 30, when he will hear the parties on the point of issuing process against Varma.

The complaint, filed by Viveck Shettyy, managing director of Indus Communications, and head of media cell, Consumer Guidance Society of India, alleged that Varma's comments were in bad taste and insulting to the elephant God.

"I am deeply hurt, aggrieved, and insulted... The accused has hurt and incited religious sentiments, beliefs by posting derogatory, outrageous comments on Twitter about Lord Ganesha. The accused has... tried to make a joke of the faith and religious beliefs of Hindus. Thus, the complainant requests the court to issue process against the accused and summon him to answer the charges levelled against him, and try and prosecute him for the offence committed by him," read the complaint, a copy of which is with dna.

The 52-year-old producer-director, who, apart from questioning the ability of Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles from the path of his devotees, made fun of his physical attributes, the complaint alleged.

According to Shettyy, Varma has committed offence under IPC, such as section 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion), section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and section 505 (statements conducting to public mischief).
