Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis may be touring the Vidarbha and Marathwada areas where farmers are facing crises, the most recent one being the untimely rains of last week. But the state government has decided against announcing a special aid package for the farmers whose crops were ruined by the rains. The state government has, instead, issued orders for immediate Panchnamas to ascertain the extent of damage in each farmer's case. The state may provide case-by-case aid, depending on what the Panchnamas say.

Revenue minister Eknath Khadse, who also holds the agriculture portfolio, has made it clear that the Union government would not provide financial assistance after the havoc created by untimely rains last week. He pointed out that the Union provides such help only if the rains are as heavy as 135 mm.

Khadse said that the untimely rains on February 28 and March 1 damaged crops on 7.49 Lakh hectares of land across the state. He said that this included 1.40 lakh hectares with horticulture cultivation. He said that the damage extended to mango, grape, orange and pomegranate crops. Wheat as well as Jowar have also been damaged to a great extent.

Meanwhile, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, during his visit to drought-hit Yavatmal district, made it a point to have dinner in a small farmer's house in a village named Pimpari Buti. The village has a population of 1,600. Fadnavis assured the villagers that the government would take short term and long-term measures for providing irrigation facilities through Jalyukta Shivaar Abhiyaan. He also met the women whose husbands had committed suicide because of the agrarian crisis. Yavatmal is the leading district in the state for farmer suicides.
