MUMBAI: Seven people narrowly escaped death after two vehicles collided on the Lower Parel flyover at midnight on Friday. Three of the seven were a group of musicians who were headed to Andheri. A beer bottle was found in one of the two vehicles, but the NM Joshi Marg police have not registered a drink driving case. The Police said the blood reports are expected soon.

According to the first information report (FIR), the incident occurred between 12.30am and 12.45am on the Lower Parel flyover, when a speeding Santro (MH04-BN-9622), travelling from Dadar to Mahalaxmi, hit a Tata Indigo (MH02-PA-3813), that was coming from the opposite direction, in a head-on  collision.

The three people, including two women, who were travelling in Indigo have been identified as Pratik Shah (driver), 31, Rekha Trivedi, 52, and Dipti Bhatt, 45, all musicians and residents of Andheri. Those travelling in the Santro have been identified as Suresh Nirmal (driver), 28, Satish Sawant, 38, Royden Pareira, 35, Rajendra Mhatre, 45 and Prakash Toradkar, 25.

“Shah told the police that the Santro, in an attempt to overtake a vehicle ahead of it, hit his vehicle. Shah, however, managed to admit Trivedi and Bhatt to Jaslok Hospital. Those in the Santro were rushed to KEM Hospital by the public,” said investigating officer and police-sub inspector Sunil Pawar of NM Joshi Marg police station.

Pawar added that Bhatt sustained a fracture on her right hand, while Trivedi was discharged, though she injured her chin. The five others travelling in the Santro sustained minor head injuries.

The police discovered an empty beer bottle from the Santro. “We are waiting for the medical reports of the people travelling in the Santro. If the report confirms that they were driving under the influence of alcohol, we will book them for drink driving. As of now, they have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for negligent driving and causing hurt,” said Pawar.

Shah and two women had gone to a musical programme held at Birla Matushree Hall near Bombay Hospital. The show ended at around 12am, after which they headed towards Andheri. Nirmal, a Colaba resident, was driving towards his residence at the time of the incident, police said.
