Regardless of traffic congestion on road and rising fuel prices, Mumbaikars continue to buy vehicles on the auspicious period of Dusshera. In the last two days, 2002 vehicles were registered at the four regional transport offices (RTOs) of Mumbai. On Dusshera, 341 vehicles were registered at three RTOs of Tardeo, Andheri and Wadala, while the Borivali RTO remained shut.

These registrations come at a time when the city has seen a rise of 26 per cent in the number of vehicles registered between the period April and September as compared to 2017. At present, there are over 33 lakh vehicles in Mumbai. Of the 2002 vehicles registered, 1080 are two-wheelers and 792 four-wheelers and rest were tempos, buses and trucks.

According to the RTO figures, the highest number of vehicles were registered at Andheri RTO (611 registrations), followed by 585 vehicles at Tardeo RTO, 474 at Wadala RTO and 332 at Borivali RTO. The Andheri and Borivali RTOs manage registrations in the western suburbs between Bandra and Dahisar, Wadala RTO takes care of registrations of eastern suburbs till Mulund, and Tardeo RTO for south Mumbai.

On Thursday, Tardeo RTO registered 33 new vehicles, Andheri RTO saw registrations of 176 vehicles while 132 vehicles were registered at Wadala RTO. Sources said that if one looks at the daily average which stands at 800 vehicles per day, the numbers dipped on Dusshera.

As per figures obtained from the RTOs, a day prior was a heavier day as Andheri RTO registered 435 vehicles while 552 vehicles were registered at Tardeo RTO. Borivali RTO registered 332 vehicles and Wadala RTO registered 342 vehicles on Wednesday.

Meanwhile looking back at the past six months — from April to September — the number of vehicles this year has seen a rise of 26 per cent as compared to 2017. In April this year, 1016 vehicles registered at all four RTOs on a daily average.

Similarly, by September the daily average of vehicles registered this year is 827 while it stood at 843 last year. "If one calculates the daily average for these six months this year, come to 808 vehicles while it was 641 vehicles every day last year. This shows that people continue to buy vehicles," said an RTO officer on condition of anonymity.

From April to September 2018, more than 1.47 lakh new vehicles have been registered at four RTO's in Mumbai. Last year, around 1.17 lakh new vehicles were registered at these RTOs. According to statistics maintained by state transport department, the highest number of vehicles registered stood at 40797 at Wadala RTO, followed by Borivali RTO at 38290 vehicles, Andheri RTO at 33000 vehicles and Tardeo RTO at 35721 vehicles between April and September this year.
