According to crime branch sleuths, the vehicle belongs to assistant inspector Sunil Khatpe. "We have recovered the vehicle from the police colony in Marol. After investigation it was found that Khatpe had purchased the second-hand Tata Safari a few years back from an individual," said an officer privy to the investigation on condition of anonymity.
"This is an important piece of evidence in the case... it makes our case stronger." The crime branch has also decided to get another medical examination of the victim done to bolster its case further.
The police are also probing on what occasions did Khapte use his private vehicle for official purposes.
"Following the arrest of eight accused in the case, two wanted ones have switched off their mobile phones. However, we have managed to track the phone of one of the them, which showed his last location in Gujarat," said a crime branch officer.
The victim, in her complaint, had told the police that when she was leaving the five-star hotel with a male friend in the wee hours of April 3, some policemen had come in a vehicle and, on the pretext of carrying out a raid, taken her and her friend to Sakinaka police station.
She had also told the Mumbai police commissioner that the arrested accused had extorted around Rs9 lakh from them and one of the inspectors had raped her in a beat chowky.
