The Central Railway on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that it's not feasible to construct a temporary foot over bridge (FOB) for the convenience of residents of Sandhurst Road as there was not proper space to do so.
The demand for a FOB is because the Hancock Bridge has been demolished and citizens have to cross the railways tracks, leading to accidents.

Advocate Suresh Kumar informed the court that it was not feasible to construct the bridge. The main reasons which he cited were existence of a water pipe line bridge very close to the proposed alignment, which caters to JJ Hospital, schools and residential areas. There are 25KV over head wires shifting of these will disrupt suburban rail.

The most important reason being no possibility of building a support pillar between closely spaced tracks, if tried then it would infringe running trains. Any column in between tracks will hit passengers travelling on footboard of trains.

The court also spoke to the Central Railway engineer in court who reiterated the same. Accordingly, the court has asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), railways and petitioner Kamlakar Shenoy to suggest any solutions and alternate sites for building the bridge.

The direction was given during the hearing of the petition filed by Shenoy, stating that though the proposal was first mooted in 2009, the bridges were yet to be dismantled. Further, no arrangements had been made so that traffic could be diverted. The petitioner pointed out that double parking and encroachments on the road from Crawford Market to Bhendi Bazaar and JJ hospital junction to Akbar Peerbhoy College had led to traffic congestion.

Advocate Trupti Puranik, appearing for the civic body, informed the court that a meeting between the corporation and railways was held but no outer (time) limit was fixed for completion of the FOB. Moreover, the corporation wants the railways to build the bridge. The court has now posted the matter for further hearing to June 21.
