To improve the quality of life of patients who suffer from breast cancer, the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), has conducted a clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of ayurvedic drugs to improve the quality of life of female patients who have non-metastatic breast cancer.

There is a huge debate between allopathy and ayurveda practitioners over the benefits of ayurveda for improving the condition of breast cancer patients. But CCRAS and AIIMS — two central government-run organisations — have already started trials to determine whether ayurvedic drugs can really help breast cancer patients. Accordingly, studies about the benefits, or the lack of it, about ayurvedic medication in helping improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients have been completed and data analysis about the same has been started.

Non-metastatic breast cancer implies that the malaise has not spread across the body. The clinical trial carried out by CCRAS and AIIMS was, primarily, conducted on non-metastatic breast cancer patients. The objective of this trial was to improve the quality of life of the patient via traditional chemotherapy.

Many females suffer from breast cancer, and the traditional way to fight this disease is via chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and other such methods. But chemotherapy and other such treatment options can be overwhelming for many patients.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the main form of cancer in the world among women is breast cancer. According to WHO's global health estimates in 2013, it is estimated that over 5,08,000 women worldwide died in 2011 of breast cancer.

Dr Rajeshwar Reddy of Podar Hospital and Ayurved Medical College said, "Patients suffering from breast cancer can develop many side effects, such as lack of appetite, headaches or fatigue. However, when they opt for ayurvedic treatment, an improvement in their quality of life can be observed within two or three months."

But on the other hand, Dr Sanjay Sharma, consultant onco-surgeon at Bombay Hospital, said: "Ayurveda can improve the immunity of patients. I do not agree that it can improve their quality of life as such, but it helps the patients tolerate their therapy better."
