Campa Cola: No sign of ordinance yet to save homes

With Just Two days to go for the demolition of Campa Cola compound flats, hopes fade for harrowed Worli residents as their desperate pleas to stop the razing of their houses to CM Prithviraj Chavan fall on deaf ears.

While chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday assured residents of Campa Cola compound that he would explore legal options including an ordinance to save their homes, sources in the BMC said they were yet to be approached by government. This has led to doubts as to whether the government is serious about issuing the ordinance immediately.

Issuing an ordinance would require the state government officials and civic officials to work together and quickly if they intend to bring it out before Monday. “Since the government officials will not be aware of the facts relating the compound and the SC judgment in this regard, they will have to sit with BMC officials to prepare draft of the ordinance, if at all it is happening. Then this draft will be tabled before the state ministers. But the civic officials have not been called yet,” a source said.

On Friday evening, a group of 20-25 compound residents made a presentation to Chavan. They demanded that the CM bring out an ordinance and save their homes. The residents will have to vacate their homes after Supreme Court (SC) ordered a demolition for FSI violations on February 27, 2013.

There are doubts whether the government intends to bring in an ordinance or whether they are considering other legal options. “There are two days left. If the government wishes, the ordinance may be issued within two days (by Monday) or will go by normal procedure which should take 10 days,” the source added.

In a hypothetical situation, it is possible residents will return if the ordinance is issued after 10 days.

Residents though hoped the ordinance or any other legal solution is found out before the eviction deadline. “We don’t want even a single home is touched. We hope a solution is found before or by Monday,” said Ajay Mehta, a resident of Midtown apartment.
